about

The Sensation Seekers play Progsploitation!

Or to put it another way – Cinematic Hammond fuelled Freakbeat.

Taking their influence from the film cues found in exploitation and underground films of the late 60's and early 70s The Sensation Seekers dabble in a broad church of beat, psych, soul and progressive rock. Originally this music woud often be played by middle-aged session musicians cheaply and speedily, their tunes to be quickly forgotten, even by the very people who crerated them.

Ravencraig Studios have painstakingly recreated this enviroment with The Sensation Seekers (who have a collective studio experience amounting to well over a century) and over a series of LPs hope to bring you an original soundtrack of Hammond organ, fuzz and wah guitars underpinned by funky rhythms to turn your party into a movie hippie happening or drug fueled orgy.

The first of these LPs is Jerk Beat released on Norway's Back To Beat imprint. Jerk Beat looks to cover the soul/beat era of Progsploitation, reflecting the mid to late 60’s pre-psych period, nodding more towards library music than music composed for a specific project. The cover design was also inspired by the great heritage of library LP’s released across Europe from the mid 60’s until the early 80’s. The abstract front illustration and back cover multi-lingual sleeve notes coupled with overly descriptive annotations all reflect a formulaic design used for library LP’s of the period.

Consequent collections by The Sensation Seekers will look to heavier, funkier, sleazier and even more electronic themes in the Progsploiation genre.

The Sensation Seekers are Angus McPake on Hammond organ. Damon McNally on guitar, Joe Peat on bass guitar and Murray Briggs on drums.

Angus has previous experience, playing a variety of instruments, with such beat luminaries as The Thanes, Les BOF! and The Nettelles and has also done session stints with MFC Chicken and The Kneejerk Reaction to name but a few.

Damon cut his teeth in the pre-internet era with, amongst others, Pietra Rosa and Freebass (not the Peter Hook band, they stole the name) in the West Midlands, later coluding with a wide range of acoustic artists. He is also to be found playing bass guitar with the occasional food-based RnR novelty combo - The Gastronauts.

Joe and Murray were the rhythm section of Baby Doc Popcorn and the Barry Trio before Joe joined Mystery Juice, whose trips behind the Iron Curtain are the stuff of legend, while Murray preceded to bash the skins for Greathead Briggs, Aberfeldy, Oi Polloi and Dominic Waxing Lyrical.

The Sensation Seekers and Ravencraig Studios went to extreme nerdish ends to make as much of an authentic noise as possible when creating Jerk Beat. The LP was recorded using only analogue equipment with vintage microphones and using period instruments and amplification, including original Hammond organs, Vox and Selmer amps and Trixon drums. The track Purple Pill Party even enjoys real tape ‘phasing’.
